Letraset and other firms produced very thin plastic type on sheets which were pressed onto paper, a letter at a time. This was often the only way to produce neat signs, posters and labels without having them printed.
Ceredigion Museum used Letraset with typed labels until about 1995

Try using Letraset to reproduce a word – neatly!

Draw a straight line on a piece of paper with a pencil
Choose your letter and place the Letraset on the paper with the dashes under the letters on the line you have drawn. Rub over the top of the letter so it sticks to the paper.
Add more letters and try to get the spacing right to make it look tidy. This was the only way of getting different sized fonts onto a piece of paper without having it done by a professional printer.
