THOMAS JOHNES (1748-1816)
exhibition number: Agriculture 15
Thomas Johnes developed a large estate at Hafod where he planted millions of trees and provided facilities for visitors as well as carrying out experiments in new agricultural practices and introducing new breeds of farm animals to the county. He published 'A Cardiganshire Landlord's Advice to his Tenants in 1790 and a Welsh version was published soon after. A second edition was published in 1800.
A bust of Mr Johnes, Hafod by Chantrey in marble was viewed by the inhabitants of Carmarthen before being sent to Cardigan Town Hall.
