SOUND RECORDING

 
The first records were produced in ???? They were on wax cylinders into which grooves were cut by a needle when recording which caused a needle to vibrate, reproducing the sound from a horn when playing. No electricity or electronics were required.
Later, flat discs were produced. Singles lasted up to 5 minutes each side and long playing discs (LPs) lasted about 20 minutes each side.
Sound was also recorded on plastic magnetic tape from the ???? This allowed a number of different sources of sounds to be recorded at the same time (multi-tracking).
CDs were first generally available during the 1990s
