MEASURING AND DRAWING

Until digital methods of surveying became available in the 1980s, most measurements of the landscape were made with tape measures and chains, or by triangulation (measuring the angles of triangles from one hill top to another).
This information was transferred to paper with rulers or draftsmen's scales and triangles.
Most surveying is now done with radar or aerial digitisation.
