Strata Florida

Strata Florida 1

The Cistertian or White monks who built Strata Florida Abbey were a strict, hard-working group of Christians.
They began to build on a site near Pontrhydfendigaid, Ceredigion, in about 1164.

The stone for building arches and windows came from as far away as Bristol, and it took fifty years to complete.

The monks continued to farm their estate and to play an active part in the life of the area until King Henry VIII closed the Abbey in 1539.
