COTTAGES IN CEREDIGION

Reconstruction of a cottage about 1850 in the Coliseum

Many cottages were very small and were single story, with a half- or full-length attic. Many were built with stone or mud walls and were covered by thatch roofs. Some 'one-night cottages' or 'Ty-unnos' were built very quickly on common land.

... a few huts we met with in this day's walk were the most antique and wretched we saw in Wales usually composed of loose stones cemented with mud and a yard in thickness, the chimney of sticks and mud, terminated with a whisp of straw, no gardens or fruit trees, but pig cots and piles of peat.
