Petrol cans were first introduced to the United Kingdom by Pratts in 1904. They contained Pratts Perfection Spirit and were painted Connaught green. They were phased out in about 1928 when the name Esso took over (Esso is derived from the initials of the makers, Standard Oil who were also the parent company of Pratts). Esso cans were painted Pantone red. They continued in use until after the Second World War when petrol pumps became more common.
