COURT CUPBOARD

The cwpwrdd deuddarn (literally two-piece cupboard) consists of a cupboard sitting on a wider base unit of drawers and cupboard. A triddarn (three-piece) has an additional open shelf at the top. Deuddarns are generally found in south Wales, triddarns in the north.

The narrow type was made for smaller houses; the type with three doors in the top section was made for large farmhouse rooms.

This court cupboard, the bequest of Mr Rees James, Aberystwyth was made for the wedding of his grandparents, about 1820.
