PURCHASING FOOD

Very little food was purchased by the poor people of Ceredigion before the 20th century. The only things that they had to buy were salt, sugar, currents and rice. An additional luxury was tea. They may have exchanged some of their own produce with others for food stuffs that they didn't produce or were short of. In years of bad harvest, they may have had to buy grain for flour (to make bread) and seed for the following years harvest.
