BARREL

The cooper was a skilled craftsman who carefully cut staves of wood so that when held together with hoops, a water-tight container was formed. It was often necessary to keep the container damp when empty so that the wood didn't shrink.

Barrels were made for storing beer, wine, salted fish and other goods that were transported by sea. They were also used as rotary butter churns.
