PREACHING CHAIRS

Preaching chairs were used by preachers for outside meetings especially before chapels were built (from the late 18th century) and for very large meetings particularly during the 1904 revival.

There are several sorts. One type had a rack (book support) fixed to the top so the preacher could stand on the seat; a second had the rack overhanging the seat so the preacher could either sit on the seat or stand on another chair at the back; a third type had a removable rack.
