WOODEN SPOON

wooden spoon and spoon knife

It was common for the spoons to be carved by the fireside on winter evenings. Sycamore was the wood used as it has no taste, and most of the work could be done with a pocket knife, but a special curved knife was necessary to hollow out the bowl of the spoon.

Ladles exactly like the modern Welsh examples have been found in Scandinavia in bogs together with remains of people who lived about 8000 years ago. Thus Ceredigion is the last home of a very old tradition.

Even in the 1970s wooden spoons and ladles are used for eating broth in South Cardiganshire.
