CANDLES

Candles were normally made from tallow (animal fat), but they could be made from whale or porpoise fat. Bees wax was used for candles by the rich and in church; paraffin wax and the wax for modern candles is made from petroleum discovered in about 1850.

It was said that candles were used in Cardiganshire at supper time from the time of the September fairs until St David's day.
