RELIGIOUS PRINTS DISPLAY

The Gospel Ship

Exhibition number: Displays 35

Religious prints

Metaphorical scenes conveying messages of Christian morality struck a chord with many as they often dealt with the trials of modern living. One example is 'The Gospel Ship'. A clipper is seen battling against the might of the sea its sails billowing with biblical verse of nautical imagery. Prints such as these were especially popular in communities on the Western seaboard of Wales, whose pious fishermen relied on God's control of the sea for their livelihood.

'The Gospel Ship' Coloured print, 48.5 x 62 cms, sold by M'lay and Co, Cardiff for one shilling (5p). It would have been hung in chapels, school rooms and homes, especially by those who had connections with the sea.
