HORSE FAIRS

Dalis fair, Lampeter, 1916

exhibition number: Agriculture 25

Horses were very important to farmers and were expensive to buy until they were replaced by tractors and cars. They were bred in Ceredigion and sold at fairs.

Dalis Fair was held in Lampeter on May 8th, then on a Saturday and Monday at the beginning of May. Hundreds of horses lined the streets.

Cardigan had a fair on Barley Saturday (the last Saturday in April) at which horses were sold.

Aberystwyth, 1848: Fairs for horses and cattle are on the Monday before January 5th, Monday next before Easter, Whit-Monday, May 14th, June 24th, September 16th.
