Not all farmers could afford to keep their own horses, but some would have borrowed them in exchange for a few days work.

Horses were used to pull ploughs and carts. They also drove machines, called horse gear; they were harnessed to a pole and walked around in a circle. This turned gears that were attached to a shaft that made machinary work. This was used for threshing and winnowing machines and corn mills
