STRAW

exhibition number: Agriculture 10

Straw is a by-product of growing corn, but it was gathered for use in various ways.

Straw was used as food and bedding for animals (when kept indoors) and in mattresses for people; bundles were used on roofs as thatch; it was used for making ropes for binding stooks of corn and for supporting thatch. It was used to make lip-work furniture and ornaments and to stuff horse collars.
