FARM GENERATOR

exhibition number: Agriculture 9

Many farms did not have mains electricity until the 1940s and 1950s. Electricity was generated by water wheels or stationary engines run on diesel which would have produced a constant background sound to what had been a very quiet environment.

The electricity was used for milking machines, cooling milk and pumping water.
