THRESHING

exhibition number: Agriculture 7

Corn had to be beaten to free the grain from the rest of the plant. This was done with a flail or threshing machine. The grain was separated from the chaff using the wind or a winnowing machine.

Corn was normally threshed by hand with a flail during the winter months. When steam powered or static threshing machines were introduced, the whole of a year's crop could be threshed at once, and the grain stored in the granary.
