COURT CUPBOARD (THREE PIECE)

Court cupboard 1

This type of three part cupboard, or court cupboard, was more common in north Wales than in south. It was used to store foodstuff and kitchen utensils. Although a high quality piece of furniture, with panelled doors and turned drops, it was essentially a piece of kitchen furniture. It would normally be kept in the main living room.

The open top section holds a display of pewter plates resting against the backboard, other bowls and storage containers could be kept here too. A secret shelf, at the front of the top of the middle section, was used to keep important documents.

The brass hinges and knobs, together with the kite shaped key holes all appear to be later additions.
