BAKING

Baking pot

Baking was often done on a griddle set over the fire on a tripod and covered by a pot or pan.

Bread, pies etc were placed on a griddle or bake stone (a large flat iron disc), and the pot placed upside-down over them. Burning peat was placed over the pot to provide all round heat.

Trivet

Some houses had small ovens built into the wall of the fire place or into a hedge bank outside.
