Straw was used for making rope that was used for binding sheaves of corn. In South Ceredigion it was also used to support thatch. In some places it was used to line the bottom of field drains.

Straw rope for holding bundles of straw for thatching in place were known as finger tip rope (rheffyn pen bys) because lengths of straw were twisted around a finger.
