BUTTER PRINTS

Butter Stamp

exhibition number: Dairy 74

The butter was weighed into pound and half-pound lumps and shaped with pats and sometimes stamped with a carved butter stamp to identify the source of the butter (instead of selling it in printed wrapping paper). The stamps were usually made of sycamore. The wood chosen for this item had to be of a low toxicity so it did not taint the flavour of the food.
