DRESSER JUGS

exhibition number: Cottage 22

Many jugs, plates and ornaments were kept on the dresser. Some may have been presents, mementos of visits to other places or an annual purchase from the local fair. Others may have been given in memory of a deceased relative, or as thanks for help during a difficult time.

Some may have been used to store things in such as needles and cotton.

Many of the jugs were made in the potteries of central England. Dressers rarely displayed pottery from Welsh potteries and the so-called Swansea cottage pottery (also made in England) which were normally kept in a glass-fronted corner cupboard.
