CHIMNEY HOOD

chimney hood, Llanon

exhibition number: Cottage 2 and 3

Fires on the cottage floor had a chimney hood over them to draw the smoke up the chimney. Sometimes this was made of wattle and daub (sticks and mud), others were made of a lath-and-plaster while others were made of planks covered in mud, like the one in Llanon cottage. They often rested on a beam that crossed the room, and were sometimes supported on partitions that protected those sitting by the fire from drafts.
