VETS' EQUIPMENT

exhibition number: Agriculture 16

All farm animals were of great financial value to farmers so they would be treated when ill or injured. Many farmers would treat their own animals or call in an expert, especially a farrier to assist when necessary.

Many vets underwent special training: after 1948, only those with qualifications could become vets.

A third group of people were involved in curing and sometimes causing illness in animals. These cast spells, often by writing magic formulae on paper which was put in a barn. A few of these survive.
